John Storie’s Debut Album Ponderosa Shares a Journey of Life, Love, and Longing Across His Western Homeland
LOS ANGELES— Guitarist/Vocalist John Storie (Jeff Goldblum’s Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, Spencer Day, New West Guitar Group) along with pianist Josh Nelson have released Ponderosa – a dynamic duo album featuring originals by Storie and Nelson along with classic songs by Woody Guthrie, Sergio Mendes, and songwriter Cliff Goldmacher. Recorded at Big City Studios in Grenada Hills, CA, Ponderosa is Storie’s first outing as a leader in addition to his first album as a vocalist. John’s work as a guitarist has been featured on albums by Gwen Stefani, Jeff Goldblum’s Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, Blake Shelton, Steve Miller, Spencer Day, Sarah McKenzie, and Sara Gazarek as well as his own trio for 15 years, the New West Guitar Group.
Coming together as a duo, Storie and Nelson bring their many years of playing together in the LA jazz scene into an intimate setting. In homage to the great duo albums of Jim Hall and Bill Evans, Ponderosa both showcases the straight-ahead influences of both players through songs such as Tinseltown and Tall Blues while expanding the sound of the duo on tracks such as The Pioneer/The Desert Wind and Nice. Featuring sounds such as baritone guitar, acoustic guitar, Wurlitzer piano, and Fender Rhodes, Ponderosa details the range of sounds between piano and guitar beyond the traditional jazz setting. As avocalist, Storie returns to his stylistic roots growing up in Oregon – performing from an early age and singing folk music with his mother Jill, a pianist.
In preparation for tour dates across the US, Ponderosa will be celebrating its release show at LA’s newest jazz club Sam First on Aug 29, 2019. As a member of actor/pianist Jeff Goldblum’s Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, Storie is also preparing for a major European tour this fall in celebration of the group’s sophomore album release on Decca Records.
