A risk taker with “lavish talent and striking originality” Jane Irving is a gifted musician who possesses an emotive, narrative style making her a unique storyteller in the jazz genre. A New Yorker since 2011, Australian jazz vocalist and pianist Jane Irving, has become a valued presence on the New York jazz scene. Guitar great Russell Malone has called her “the personification of taste.”  A classical piano student from age six, Jane regularly incorporates the instrument into her live gigs. But following a long-ago epiphany at her first gig as a solo vocalist, she’s made singing her primary means of expression. Eluding easy classification, Irving is not a bebop singer, not an old-fashioned crooner, but an artist with a clear jazz sensibility and an individual sound, studied and seasoned. According to writer John Clare, she has “plenty of personality, expressed as genuine wit and pure musical enthusiasm … a highly musical combination of relaxed energy and thrilling release. She is full of rhythm.”

Irving’s 2023 release, Don’t Quit Now, features pianist Josh Richman, bassist Kevin Hailey and drummer Kayvon Gordon on a collection of songs by the likes of Ivan Lins, Al Cohn/Dave Frishberg, Dizzy Gillespie and Jay Leonhart. Enduring loss of work through the pandemic and going through seismic shifts of her own, Irving sought creative nourishment in the vulnerability of this space. She invites listeners to step with her into that place, fulfilling the next step in her creative journey.

‘Don’t Quit Now’ is a reminder and a remedy to the uncertainty caused by the Covid lockdown. Jane’s narrative quality gives this material plenty of space to highlight her nuanced and intimate delivery. These are great performances that don’t draw attention to themselves but to the group sound and carefully chosen material. “I wanted to make something that I needed in the hopes that someone else might need it too. A sort of antidote to the craziness of the world.”
